The Medical Clinic III in the University Hospital Aachen has a main focus in gastroenterology, hepatology, and endocrinology. About 40 physicians and 40 researchers work in the laboratories and different clinical sections (intensive care unit, three in-patient wards, endoscopy and ultrasound unit as well as several out-patients clinics including one for patients with inflammatory bowel disease). The department has a large research activity including mono- and multicentre clinical studies, preclinical studies, and applied and basic laboratory research. The research focus is the basic scientific examination of the pathogenesis of liver fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, hepatitis B, inflammatory bowel disease, Clostridium difficile infection, and sepsis/critical illness. By applying multiple animal and cell culture models researcher of the Medical Clinic III are studying NF-kappa-B and other intracellular signalling pathways, apoptosis/cell cycle regulation, miRNAs in chronic liver disease, and immunology/infectious diseases of the liver and intestinal tract. These studies are complemented by translational and clinical studies with a specific focus on biomarker research in sepsis/critical illness, liver fibrosis, hepatocellular carcinoma, and inflammatory bowel disease. The laboratories are fully equipped for basic molecular biology, cell biology and immunology. Cytometer, magnetic and fluorescence-activated cell sorters, real-time PCR instruments and microscopes for histopathology and immunofluorescence imaging are available. On the campus, several technical platforms are offered such as for confocal time-lapse, electron, and two-photon microscopy as well as for microarray and luminex technology. The centre in Aachen is ideally suited to perform translational studies that combine basic research with clinical studies.
