Institute Presentation

The University of Liverpool University Department of Gastroenterology works together with NHS colleagues to provide the Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD)  clinical service at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital, located adjacent to the University campus. This service provides care for approximately 1800 patients with Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis and provides a tertiary referral service for complex IBD across North-West England and North Wales. The IBD team includes three Clinical Academic staff (Professors Chris Probert and Jonathan Rhodes and Dr Melita Gordon) and four NHS Consultant Gastroenterologists (Drs Sree Subramanian, Paul Collins, Tony Ellis, Martyn Dibb), two IBD specialist nurses, a dietician and a pharmacist, supported by specialist radiology and pathology services and working closely with a colorectal surgical team run by 5 consultant surgeons. The endoscopy unit has state of art facilities including four theatres and equipment that includes capsule and balloon enteroscopy, magnifying colonoscopy and confocal endomicroscopy.

Research includes both investigator-led non-commercial and commercial clinical trials in IBD but much of the work of the Department is Translational. This focuses on two principal areas: mucosal-bacterial interaction and carcinogenesis. We have been particularly interested in the role of inflammation in cancer development and in the role of bacteria, particularly E. Coli,  in pathogenesis of Crohn's disease and colorectal cancer. Metabonomic studies are also being conducted in IBD and other GI conditions.

We have expertise in mouse models of inflammatory bowel disease and colitis associated colon cancer in particular the dextran sulphate sodium (DSS) and azoymethane/DSS models. We have tested these in various transgenic mouse strains in which individual members of the NF-kB family of proteins have been deleted.
